First off, Blakey* is probably THE most photogenic dog I’ve ever seen. He is just so.dang.CUTE and the pictures (almost!) capture his simply adorable personality. I mean, look at this angel face.
*He was already named Blake when we took him home, but we affectionately called him “Blakey”.
Blake’s Story
Blake’s story is like hundreds of thousands of dogs in Texas. He was put on the euthanasia list in a small rural shelter for no reason other than they simply didn’t have room for him anymore. He did absolutely nothing wrong, and his only crime was not being born into a loving family. Here is the photo plea that was sent out from the shelter alerting rescues that he needed out ASAP or he would be put to sleep. His photo was then sent to me from the adoption coordinator. With the current rescue I am fostering for, I can usually see each dog’s journey from start to finish (i.e. shelter –> furever home). Other rescues have a different adoption/rescue process.
After he was picked up from the shelter he was transported to the vet where he was neutered and received all his shots. When I picked him up, he fell asleep in the car on the way home and was so relaxed I thought he was high on his pain meds, but turns out he is just super calm!
It took him no time to get settled in! He is so loving and never met a person or dog he didn’t love. He is so incredibly playful and sweet. Here I am attempting to take all 4 of the pups (my 2 plus the current 2 fosters) on a walk… the giant leash knot pretty much summed up how that walk went. We usually prefer to split them in groups of 2 (or my husband and I walk them together) but I was low on time that day.
I try to take time to get “Glamour Shots” of all my fosters because so much of the networking for adopters is done online, and all the potential adopters have to base their decisions on is the pictures. This is why pictures are so important to getting the pups exposure. And if you notice, they ALWAYS have to have a bow or bow tie… I SWEAR everyone loves a dog in a bow tie, it’s just science 🙂
We had Blakey for about a month before the perfect family came along! He was originally supposed to be adopted by a man from Illinois who was driving to Houston to see family, but that adopter ended up adopting a pup up North (which is still a win in my book!). Thankfully Blakey was so popular he already had another family with an approved application waiting to meet him! Here he is before we took him on the “Meet and Greet” for his new family! His new family is a mom who is a teacher, dad, their 2 kids and their older sweet rescue dog they’ve had since it was a puppy. His new name is Milo!*
*Funny story, one of the kids is named Blake so they had to choose a different name
While people often express to me how hard it would be for them to leave a dog you’ve grown to love…it is! BUT, when you leave them with an amazing adopter that is so excited and ready to make them part of the family, it is SO worth it! Especially since it means you can go and save another Blakey in need. Without letting them go, you can’t save another.
The next day after dropping him off with his forever family, I got the sweetest text how they will love him forever with their whole heart (happy tears!)
Happy Life Blakey!
