Everyone loves a Before and After!
I’m so excited that our guest apartment kitchen is finished! We had been wanting to update this space since we moved in, but it had been lower on our priority list. Our guest apartment is around 500 square feet with a full kitchen and bathroom. It is over our garage and has a separate staircase entrance that isn’t connected to our main house. The apartment is a great multi-purpose space for us and can be used as an office, gym, mother-in-law suite, nanny suite, or could be rented out (we wouldn’t use this option although my brother-in-law lived here for a few months!) and has so much potential.
Updates
We did the updates in stages. Before we moved in, we painted all of the cabinets white and the backsplash gray to match the walls. This really refreshed the kitchen enough to make it more neutral, but it still didn’t look finished to me.
During the second phase we added:
- New gold hardware to all of the cabinets (less than $2/pull)
- Updated the backsplash to simple white subway tile ($1.20/sq foot)
- New calacatta quartz countertops
- New faucet (similar) and undermount stainless steel sink (similar)
- Open shelving over the kitchen sink
Lastly, I added some finishing decor items from my house and of course, garden roses (I’ve been super happy with this website for flowers and think they are a great price)!
I served as the general contractor for this project which saved us a lot of money. I sourced the countertops/fabricator, ordered and (my mom!) picked up the backsplash tile and grout, and hired a handyman to install the backsplash and re-install the sink. The kitchen already had nice cabinets and appliances (that were actually brand new and had never been used) so it was all cosmetic updates which kept costs down.
Hope you enjoyed this before and after update! Don’t forget pin the below to save for later! 🙂
