On an occasional lazy Friday night, my husband and I will turn on Netflix hoping to stumble upon some great new series or movie we’ve never heard of. But what usually happens is that we get bored of scrolling and end up turning on The Office re-runs (that we’ve seen too many times to count but it’s still hilarious every time!).
I decided to put together the below list of series that I’ve watched and liked for anyone else that is looking for an unusual “less-hyped” list of entertaining content (i.e. I’ll leave out the Stranger Things, GOT, etc that everyone has heard of). I’ve included a very minimal explanation because if you are a weirdo like me, you won’t want to know too much about the series so you can have an open mind (this drives my husband crazy!).
This list has all different genres that you can look at depending on your mood.
I also have a list of fun books to read here and my favorite Podcasts here.
- The Last Kingdom (historical fiction) –
- “As a child, Uhtred witnessed his father being killed and the Saxon army defeated by invading troops. Danish warlord Earl Ragnar captured Uhtred and raised him in a Danish camp … Years later, Uhtred is a valiant warrior who is dealt another tragic blow when his home is deliberately set on fire, killing his surrogate family, including Ragnar. Now exiled, he vows to avenge Ragnar’s death and reclaim his homeland.”
- Broadchurch (fiction crime series) –
- “Crime series (fiction) about a murder in a small town named Broadchurch. When the corpse of an 11-year-old British boy is found bloodied and dirty on an idyllic beach, a small Dorset community becomes the focus of a police investigation and media madness.”
- Alias Grace (historical fiction) –
- “Based on the 1996 Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, “Alias Grace” tells the story of young Grace Marks, a poor Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who is accused and convicted of the 1843 murder of her employer and his housekeeper”
- The Staircase (true crime documentary) –
- “In 2001 novelist Michael Peterson’s wife died, and he claimed she perished after falling down stairs at their home. The medical examiner, however, determined that she had been beaten with a weapon, which led to Peterson becoming a suspect in what would become a murder investigation.”
- I’m Sorry (comedy) –
- “A seemingly confident comedy writer, wife and mom (Andrea Savage) comically exposes her inner immaturity and neuroses through unexpected life situations”
What are some of your favorite series that you recommend?
