A lot of Texans aren’t aware that we have our own mini wine country right here in Texas. A 4 hour drive from Houston (1 hr from Austin) takes you to the cutest little town filled with tons of charm, shops, restaurants and WINE! Fredericksburg is great for a girls trip (or bachelorette party – I think we saw around 5/6 the weekend we went), couples trip, or a mom/daughter trip. You can stay right off of Main Street and walk almost anywhere you need to go. This was the second trip here that I’ve taken with my best friends from college, and each one has been a blast.
Where to Stay
Both times I’ve gone on a girls trip, I’ve stayed in an air BnB and had a great time! We stayed in this one a few weekends ago and it was great for 4 girls. The owner even had a complimentary wine tasting waiting for us upon arrival. It has this cute little courtyard where we drank coffee in the morning, and it was about a 5 min walk from Main Street. There are also a few small inns that I saw that look really fun (this one!). I would recommend looking on the map to make sure they are located near Main St.
Where to Eat
Full disclosure, I am not a foodie and try to stick to a veggie/occasionally pescetarian diet. But that being said, my foodie friends booked the Vaudeville tasting menu for Friday and it was delicious (and they were accommodating to my veggie request!). The restaurant is beautiful and they have an outdoor patio/fireplace which is perfect for an after-dinner glass of wine. It was a little pricey, but you pay for the experience which I think was well worth it. Saturday night we tried to go to Hondo’s (a local favorite) but it was packed, so we ended up a CrossRoads instead. CrossRoads has a back bar with a band which was a great after dinner spot. For breakfast we just wandered up and down main street and found a few cute little cafes.
Wineries
What I love about the Frederickburg wineries is that there is a wine bus that takes you to all of the wineries along 290 for $25. It is a hop on/hop off every 15 minutes and is so convenient! You can walk to the pick up spot from Main Street, and they will even hold all of your souvenirs/wine/wine glasses for you until the end of the day. Even though there are around 14 wineries on the tour, we can usually only squeeze in 3-4 in a day.
Below were my favorites:
- Becker – although we didn’t visit it this time, Becker is my favorite Frederickburg winery. I like their outdoor porch area, tasting room, and lavender fields
- Grape Creek – this weekend they had fun live music on the patio. They have a cute little gift shop with fun wine accessories and trinkets.
- Wedding Oak Creek/Wildseed Farms – the wine was good and they have a large patio. It is also a flower farm with beautiful fields which is great for photo-ops!
Have you been to Fredericksburg? What are your favorite spots? I’m hoping to take my husband there on a couple’s trip next.
