Last April I had the privilege of attending the Masters in Augusta, Georgia (wow this post is way overdue!). It was really a fun event and gave me so much more of an appreciation for the course. The grounds were beautiful, full of lush hanging baskets, manicured lawns, and azaleas. We lucked out that the weather was very pleasant and mild as we walked the greens with only a small sprinkle of rain.

The week before the tournament I was frantically searching the web to find some information on what the heck I am supposed to wear. Even though it is a sporting event, it is such a well-known and prestigious occasion I wasn’t sure if it was more dressy, casual or even sporty. Unfortunately, there really wasn’t too much information that I could find.
When we arrived, ladies were dressed in everything from maxis to Lilly Pulitzer dresses, rompers, shorts, white pants, skirts and even yoga pants (yes, I saw a lady in yoga pants!). But, the large majority of ladies were in casual, golf attire*. While I love a fashion moment as much as the next gal, I would recommend dressing in casual and comfortable attire that is neat and put together. I wore a golf skort, striped top and white jean jacket. I ended up buying a Masters hat at the pro shop because it was humid and drizzled a bit. I felt really comfortable and appropriate for walking, the temperature, and dressiness of the event.
*I would point out that it also depends on why you are there and who you’re with. If you’re there with a big group as a social event, you might be more inclined to wear what the other ladies are wearing, even if it is a bit dressier. If you are there for the golf, wear your golf gear. Almost all of the men have on khaki shorts, polos and hats.
Shoes
I highly recommend close-toed tennis shoes. You will be walking a lot and the course has lots of hills. Additionally, if it has rained at any point in the few days before it will probably be muddy. I absolutely would not wear any type of heel or wedge. You could get away with open toe sandals, but I don’t recommend it. I wore these!
Hats
Lots of the ladies wore baseball caps and visors. If you are worried about the humidity or rain I would definitely recommend one. There were not many people wearing sun hats. *Ladies do not need to remove their caps when dining in Berckmans place restaurants, but the gentlemen do need to remove their hats.
Jackets/Layering
While we were there the weather was very pleasant but a tad chilly in the morning. I was happy to have my jacket with me and wore it the majority of the day. When you are out on the course there are not many places to take shelter from the weather so I would bring a sweater or light jacket with you if you get cold easily. I used the pockets of my jacket for my credit card, I.D., lipstick in lieu of a purse or any type of bag.
Golf Skort
Thank you Masters, I now have a new obsession with golf skorts. They are my “yoga pants of summer” if you will 😉 . I ended up buying around 10 golf skorts on Amazon – yes, that is not a typo. But thankfully for my bank account I returned around 5 of them. I ended up wearing this one during the day and it was super comfortable and appropriate. I would also recommend this one, this one, and this one. You will be climbing up hills or bleachers, sitting in folding chairs and standing for long periods of time which is why I recommend the skort over skirt option.
A Few Additional Notes
There were very, very limited plant-based options available so I would eat a big breakfast before you go since you aren’t allowed to bring outside food. Outside of Berckmans (which also has limited selections), I saw a fruit cup and chips that were plant-based. If you are vegetarian, there are more options available to you such as the iconic pimento cheese sandwich.
Since you aren’t allowed to bring cell phones or cameras, there is one place where you can get your picture taken outside the clubhouse. Large lines usually form so I would go early in the morning although the line moves pretty quickly.
The Masters has gift shops available to buy hats, shirts, jackets, and other memorabilia to take home for friends and family. The great part is that they have a shipping station available so that you don’t have to carry it around the entire time!
Leave it in the car. There are pay phones all around the course in case of emergency or if you need to call and check on someone. Make sure to write down any numbers that you will need to call while you’re there. I think you might event feel a little liberated spending an entire day without it. More places should implement this policy! 🙂
Have you been to the Masters? What did you wear?
